Get Back-to-School-Ready with ModCloth

You may have spotted ModCloth’s wares on stars like Taylor Swift, Emma Watson, and Zooey Deschanel. You may already know that ModCloth is a retail haven for totally playful, sometimes quirky, always covetable pieces, including vintage and vintage-inspired clothes. But what you might not know is that the site was actually created by high school sweethearts, which kind of makes it the most appropriate place for a little back-to-school shopping.

Back in the day… The summer after graduating high school in 2002, Susan Gregg Koger was looking to unload some vintage finds. Eric Koger, her then-boyfriend (now husband!) offered to help her create an e-commerce site. Combining her love of thrift-store shopping and his computer-wiz skills, the couple decided they had a pretty good thing going on.

That fall, they both headed to school at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh and kept up with their site. Eventually they would expand from a basement in a college house to real offices in Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and San Francisco. They’ve continued to sell vintage finds, but they also offer collections designed in-house and added more plus-size options, as well as shoes, intimates and home décor. They have spread cuteness all over the Internet and beyond.

And that, in a nutshell, is how ModCloth was born.

The cool things they do… Now that you know the backstory, check out all the amazing things that happen when two young people put their minds together. Here are a few features of the site:

ModStylist – Get the A-list treatment by chatting with one of the site’s stylists for free. You can email, chat, or call and she’ll help you pick an outfit for a specific event, find pieces in the perfect size, or offer up ideas on how to wear a tough-to-style item.

Be the Buyer – Flex your style muscles and let the site know what they should carry down the road. You’ll get to browse through photos of real samples and either “Pick It” or “Skip It.” You can also leave comments and explain why you nixed a less-than-thrilling piece, or why you’re gaga for an item that made the cut.

The Style Gallery – Here’s where you and your fellow fashionistas can shine. Browse pics that real girls have uploaded. Compare notes on how other girls would style, say, a cat-print dress or a pair of lime-green peep toe heels. You can also shop an entire outfit.

How we’d shop the site for school stuff…

Check out their collection of casual dresses for the perfect First Day look, including the Mod Life Dress ($75). It’s a sleeveless frock with a colorful print, which features sunglasses, go-go boots, lipstick tubes, and more. We’d also peruse the shoes for a comfy pair of flats to take you from your first class to your last without incident. A pair of Everyday Adorable Flats ($33) in mint should fit the bill.

If you’re heading to college, you’ve gotta pack some style into your dorm room. Scope out ModCloth’s home décor for everything from an otter tape dispenser to pretzel pillowcases to a heart-shaped mirror. We’ve got our eye on the All Whale and Good Duvet Cover ($80). It’s got style, but won’t clash with whatever your roommate brings with her.
